Alternatives for Replacing White (Refined) Sugar
Today's society eats way too much white sugar. The process of making refined sugar starts with the sugar cane or sugar beets and they squeeze any goodness out of it and ends up with white sugar. .. ok, so that's the short version but generally, that describes it pretty well. As much as we try to eat healthy, sugar also occurs naturally in foods.
The trick is to limit the amount of sugar we eat. Soda pop is a common beverage but did you know that just 20 oz of pop contains 17 tsp of sugar? So if you are thinking of cutting back on pop but are finding it hard to do, put 17 teaspoons of sugar in a bottle in the fridge where your pop would go and every time you open the fridge, look at that first.. it is a great reminder of why you are trying to cut down or cut out pop.
Just remember, sugar is sugar, whether it is a natural sugar, like honey or molasses etc., there is more goodness in these products, but they are still sugar and you should be very careful about your intake. Check out the sugar content on cans etc as well. You will be surprised at how many products have refined sugars such as fructose (corn syrup) in them without you realizing it.
Many people use artificial sweeteners, which has it's own controversy and most agree it seems that they are not good for you.
